The majority of established agencies in the UK belong to the Association which exists to provide a forum for member agents to discuss industry matters, to represent the interests of agents and their clients and to uphold a code of good practice. Most writers will never need to have direct contact with the Association, but all receive indirect benefits. In practical terms we agents need to discuss amongst ourselves a host of issues. We're under constant pressure from publishers, who want to improve terms for themselves, sometimes at the expense of authors. New technologies, and new ways of selling books, are emerging constantly, and we need to discuss with publishers how to treat these new developments and what is a fair deal. Sometimes new legislation is drafted which affects the industry, which we can respond to on behalf of authors. All of this is one removed from authors, but serves to keep all agents well informed and for our profession to serve writers as well as possible. There are certain criteria required for membership related to size of turnover and length of service. This doesn't necessarily mean that any agent who isn't a member of the Association must be treated with suspicion, but that agents who are members have committed themselves to a high level of service and to uphold the Code of Practice. The council of the Association is made up of seven member agents.
